San Juan River Fly Fishing Guides
A San Juan River fly fishing trip should be on every angler's list of trout fisheries to visit. It can be fished 365 days a year and hosts thousands of fish per mile. This river is home to many trophy caliber fish and can be a trip of a lifetime for many anglers. The San Juan can be described as a “trout factory” due to the high number of fish per mile and the year round cold water. Join one of our San Juan River fly fishing guides for a day on the water!
San Juan River Fly Fishing Trip Options
Lower San Juan
Full Day Float Only
April-May, September-October
The Lower San Juan River is a scenic desert float with banks lined with cottonwoods and russian olives. Less populated than the upper sections, the lower has a special feel about it. This section of river holds primarily brown trout with an average size of 15-17 inches. There is great opportunity for trophy sized fish through this section of water.
One of the main differences about the lower river compared to the QW of the San Juan is the bug life. The lower is abundant with PMD's, Caddis, and periodic yellow sally hatches. These hatches make for great spring dry fly fishing and sight fishing opportunities.
Another major difference in the lower river is the lack of pressure it receives compared to the Quality Waters of the San Juan. There is almost no wade fishing pressure because it's private, and the section is more of a challenge to float. What's this mean? The fish are far more willing to "play the game". Anglers get to experience trout fishing at it's finest. It is one of those sections of river that feels untamed and untapped.
Because the river flows have to be right, we cannot float this section year round. Our San Juan River fly fishing guides will ensure you have a great day on the lower river!
Quality Waters (QW)
Half day or Full Day float
January-April, November-December
The most well known section of the San Juan River is known as the Quality Waters. This is a four mile section starting at the mighty Texas hole. Hosting 10,000-12,000 fish per mile, this is a must fish section for anglers. There's nothing quite like watching several thousand fish up on the surface taking advantage of a blanket midge or BWO hatch. The river almost appears to be boiling when this happens.
During certain times of year, the water is crystal clear and it almost feels like floating on a moving fish tank. Being able to see the holding depth of fish quickly changes the game and hookup ratio. The Juan is known for holding some of the largest browns in the United States. With constant flows, and consistent hatches, this river is quite literally a big fish factory.
There is almost always an opportunity for dry fly fishing, sight fishing, and hooking up with big fish. Fishing the San Juan is an experience everyone should have. Join one of our enthusiastic San Juan River fly fishing guides for a day on the water!
