Animas River Guide Trip
The Animas River flows directly through the town of Durango and is the home waters to local anglers. Starting in the high alpine near Silverton, Colorado, this water is crisp and clean. An Animas river guide trip is rewarding due to the high number of trophy sized fish. Having an abundance of sculpin, caddis, stoneflies, and midges, anglers are offered many different approaches and learning moments to catch these fish. Our Durango fly fishing guides will change your perspective on Colorado trout fishing on these sections.
Animas River Trip Options
We offer Animas Valley Floats (full day only) from April-May and August-October. This section runs through the oxbow section above town which is an old glacier valley. This is an all time Durango fly fishing trip.
Because this section has such a lack of pressure, anglers are able to "rope up" and throw heavier tippet. These fish go ballistic when hooked, and it always feels good having them on strong tippet.
This section is known for crystal clear water and deep holes offering great opportunity for streamer fishing and dry dropper fishing. Later in the season, the BWO and hopper fishing can be fantastic. More often than not, you will have the river to yourself due to the fact it is private. Have you ever seen a fish move 15 plus feet to eat a hopper? If not, this is the place to set the bar.
Because the river bottom is almost all sand through the valley, anglers can watch tank like fish move out of the deep holes and feed in 1-2 feet of water. This is the type of fishing that gets the heart thumping, and almost always leaves anglers with heavy anticipation of the next bend. Our Durango fly fishing guides can't get enough of this section.
Half day floats typically take place in town. Big boulders, fast runs, and aggressive fish is the best way to describe this section. From 32nd st. down to 9th street is a great half day. This section of river is home to many large brown and rainbow trout that when hooked, put on a rodeo. Reach out today!
